Barcelona is known for its warm beaches, excellent weather and outstanding architecture.

Barcelona is known for its warm beaches, excellent weather and outstanding architecture. However, tucked away at the CosmoCaixa science museum is a little slice of paradise, the flooded rainforest Barcelona.

If you’re a fan of science and nature, this museum is a must-see destination on your trip to Barcelona. Located in the heart of the city, the Cosmocaixa Museum offers a variety of interactive exhibits and educational programs for visitors of all ages. One of the museum’s most popular attractions is the flooded rainforest exhibit, which allows visitors to explore a replica of a tropical rainforest habitat and learn about the unique ecosystems and biodiversity of these environments.

In this blog, we’ll delve into all that the Cosmocaixa Museum has to offer and give you a sneak peek at what you can expect when you visit.

History of the CosmoCaixa

Between 1909 – 1979 the building which now houses the flooded indoor rainforest Barcelona served as an asylum for the blind. In 1979, it was closed for renovations and reopened in 2004 under the name CosmoCaixa Barcelona. The new building is up to four times the original, although it has retained most of its original façade.

What is the Flooded Rainforest Barcelona?

The flooded rainforest Barcelona, in CosmoCaixa, is an indoor-simulated part of the Amazon rainforest in the Science Museum of Barcelona. The indoor rainforest Barcelona offers a unique look at the evolution of life showcased by environmental, natural, space and science elements.

The indoor rainforest Barcelona facility has an imposing spiral walkway that leads visitors to the Amazonian tree, which is the centerpiece of the walkway.

Barcelona Rainforest: One of the Many Exhibitions

The indoor flooded rainforest Barcelona features a variety of temporary and permanent exhibitions. Entry is free for children below 16 years, and adults pay 6 euros. The museum is open between 10 am to 8 pm from Monday to Sunday, except on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The museum is regarded as one of the most outstanding preserves of science in Europe and is managed by La Caixa. Some of the exhibitions include:

Indoor Flooded Rainforest Barcelona

The flooded rainforest is one of the most fascinating exhibitions in the CosmoCaixa. The exhibition is completely encased in glass and offers an impressive replica of the Amazonian ecosystem. The flooded rainforest offers visitors a chance to view the delicate and vanishing ecosystem from all perspectives, including underwater.

The forest is home to nearly 100 species, including insects, birds, frogs, snakes, turtles and three-metre-long pirarucu fish. The 1,000 square meter space is enhanced by jungle heat, native plants and various smells to recreate life in the Amazon to the smallest detail. You can view the ecosystem from above ground or underwater via the viewer’s tunnel.

A tour of the flooded forest is an immersive experience that showcases one of the world’s most complex natural ecosystems. Different tree species, such as Ceiba trees that grow from molds made by museum workers, and a watering system that mimics the humidity and rain of the forest give visitors a feel for the Amazon.

When you enter the Barcelona rainforest, you will find manuscripts, illustrations and interactive resources that give clues to help you understand the forest’s biodiversity. The forest is partly submerged to represent the Amazon forest which experiences a lot of rainfall throughout the year. As a result, most of the species of flora and fauna have adapted to living submerged, and you can experience them in the indoor flooded rainforest Barcelona.

Geological Wall

The “Geological Wall” displays geological structures and formations such as volcanic activity, erosion, sedimentation and faults. This section is dedicated to geology and its role in the earth’s formation.

You can view and study different rocks from various parts of the world, such as the folded rocks from the Alps. Some of the rocks displayed are native to Catalonia. Each cut represents a geological structure and is supported by the geological process that led to its formation.

Seven pieces make up the Geological Wall, each from different places, including potassium from Suria, sandstone from Mallorca and volcanic matter from the Garrotxa volcanic zone. The wall is over 24 metres long and weighs 90 tons forming one of the most expansive geological collections in the world.

The Universe Hall

Enjoy an interactive tour of the creation of the cosmos that traces the evolution of species. The Universe hall covers 3500 square meters and presents a chronological narrative from the Big Bang to the last frontiers of evolutionary knowledge. The Universe Hall is a state-of-the-art fusion of art and science thanks to the contributions of many scientists and artists to create various themes of scientific knowledge.

The hall includes a mathematics laboratory that acknowledges the importance of the discipline in answering the universe’s most complex mysteries. The three areas that make up the Universe Room are Cosmos, Evolution and Borders. In Cosmos, visitors can view a three-dimensional graphic showing the expansion of the universe. The 3D graphic illustrates the evolution of matter since the beginning of time.

Evolution is marked by a bioreactor at the entrance where living beings, digital reproductions and stereoscopic photographs are displayed. They tell the secrets of life and the evolution of different life forms on the planet.

The Borders section is presided over by a large brain-shaped dome and is the entrance to the most complex structure in the cosmos; the human brain.

Clik and Flash

The CosmoCaixa museum is the perfect attraction for kids. The exhibitions available use cutting-edge technology to showcase evolution and science through stunning visuals and interactive activities. Kids can enjoy a fun and interactive science adventure at the Clik and Flash exhibition.

Children can play games in the split Clik and Flash room to learn about science. Clik uses the senses, i.e., smell and touch, and Flash uses technology to simulate environments, exploration and construction.

Bubble Planetarium

Kids can experience the universe in one of the most advanced facilities, where they can enjoy a full-dome projection system and modern stereo technology. The planetarium presents the astronomical journey, one of the most stunning views of the starry sky that will excite the little ones.

The astronomical simulator tracks the sky on different days throughout the year. A live program showcases celestial objects and the ephemeris that can be viewed at night.

The bubble planetarium introduces children to the world of astronomy and is the perfect space to spark their young minds with curiosity.

Other Activities on the Fun Cycle

Dinosaurs , A Story of Survival – Travel back in time and run with the dinosaurs in Dinosaurs in Full Dome. Immerse yourself in an evolutionary adventure.

Planet Hunters – The full dome showcases animated shows of Celeste and Moon’s Space’s journey across the sky as they search for planets beyond the solar system.

Family Visit: El Sol – Experience an exhilarating journey through the solar system with your family as you learn about the sun and the long relationship between the bright star and human beings.

Science challenges – Enjoy a scientific escape room full of science puzzles and problems to escape rooms. Use your critical thinking and come up with creative solutions.

There you have it! The Cosmocaixa Museum in Barcelona is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in science and nature. The interactive exhibits and hands-on activities make it a fun and educational experience for people of all ages. The flooded rainforest exhibit is particularly unique and gives visitors the opportunity to experience the beauty and complexity of this vital ecosystem.
